HMRC - don't leave it too late

If you were self employed at any time during the period 6 April 2015 to 5 April 2016 you will have to submit a 2016 tax return to HMRC.
The deadline for filing this return is 31 January 2017 which may seem a long time away but you must remember two things:

  1. You have to submit the return online. You mustn't submit a paper return otherwise you'll face a £100 penalty.
  2. It takes time for HMRC to put you in a position where you can submit the return online.
The first step, if you haven't already done so, is to notify HMRC that you're self employed Although it's possible to register online sometimes something goes wrong and you have to revert to submitting paper forms.
Just this week we were told that it would take HMRC four weeks to issue the forms.

So don't delay - start today.

And remember, as always if you need any advice just contact us.
